Snap OS 2.0 Brings WebXR, Faster Browser & New AR Features to Spectacles
Snap has announced the next generation of its operating system for augmented reality glasses, introducing Snap OS 2.0. The updated platform powers the company’s fifth-generation Spectacles, which were released for developers last year, and sets the stage for a full consumer launch in 2026.
Faster Browsing and Smarter Interface
The highlight of Snap OS 2.0 is a new built-in browser designed for speed and efficiency. Pages now load faster while consuming less power, making navigation smoother than before. Users can type or voice-search URLs, revisit browsing history, and refresh pages easily thanks to an upgraded toolbar. Snap has also introduced a redesigned home screen with widgets, bookmarks, and multitasking features, including the ability to resize windows similar to a laptop experience.
WebXR Integration for Immersive Experiences
One of the most important upgrades is WebXR support, allowing Spectacles owners to access AR experiences directly from supported websites. This means interactive augmented reality applications can now be enjoyed without installing separate apps.
Spotlight & Gallery Lenses
Snap OS 2.0 also introduces a Spotlight Lens, enabling vertical video and other content to be overlaid onto the real world. For example, users can watch videos from their favorite creators while completing everyday tasks. Snap says the vertical field of view of Spectacles is optimized for this type of content, letting users stay hands-free without looking down at their phone.
In addition, the new Gallery Lens gives users a more engaging way to revisit their captured moments. Spectacles content can now be viewed in a carousel layout, making it simple to organize favorites, share with friends, or post directly to Stories.
Travel Mode for On-the-Go AR
Another new feature, Travel Mode, enhances AR stability when in motion. Whether you’re riding in a car or flying on a plane, the system maintains smooth tracking and keeps digital overlays steady.
Competitive Timing Ahead of Meta Connect
The release of Snap OS 2.0 comes just before Meta’s Connect conference, where Meta is expected to showcase its own advancements in smart glasses, AI, and AR technologies. By upgrading its software now, Snap is positioning Spectacles as a strong competitor in the growing wearable AR space.
