id Software Job Posting Sparks Speculation on Next FPS Title

May 30, 2025 – After the successful launch of Doom: The Dark Ages earlier this month, fans have been eager to learn what id Software is working on next. While the studio has remained silent, a newly discovered job listing has fueled speculation about the developer’s future project.

According to gaming insider Timur222, id Software recently posted a vacancy for a Lead Gameplay Features Programmer on an “unannounced video game project.” The position requires six or more years of industry experience or a strong background in first-person shooters (FPS)—a clear sign that the next title could follow the studio’s legacy in the FPS genre.

The listing also confirms the project will be built on id Tech, the studio’s proprietary game engine. Its latest version, id Tech 8, debuted at the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, showcasing advanced rendering capabilities. Given id Software’s history of technical innovation, some analysts believe the new title might even utilize a hybrid engine setup, similar to Quake Champions in 2022, which merged id Tech with Saber3D.

Although the job description doesn’t reveal the game’s current development stage, it emphasizes the need for console development expertise, hinting at a multi-platform release—consistent with id Software’s past strategy.

Adding to the speculation, many fans recall the January 2024 Xbox Developer Direct, where a mysterious teaser suggested that Quake 6 could be in development. However, that teaser was shown under MachineGames, id’s sister studio, leaving fans wondering whether the two projects might be connected.

For now, nothing is officially confirmed. But one thing is certain: id Software’s next project is shaping up to be another cutting-edge FPS, and anticipation across the gaming community is already running high.
